Update by Dr. Rammohan Rao Kairam on May 31, 2007

May 31st 2007
Report from the President

Since my last communication on September1, 2006, much has happened in AMC. The most important to report is the enthusiasm and the commitment shown by the current principal, CV Rao (1966 batch) and the commitment of IV Rao, the current Director of Medical Services. Over the past several months they were able to accomplish the following:

  • Refurbished the class rooms with Audio-Visual equipment
  • Seminar Hall has been upgraded
  • Obtained a 20 lakh rupees grant to improve AMC Ladies Hostel and a new building for the central laboratory. There are now plans for the construction of a Super Specialty block
  • Managed to obtain additional AC Power lines up to AMC
  • Upgrading of the buildings behind Ladies Hostel will begin shortly (entirely funded by AMCANA funds). Several bath rooms and toilets have already been renovated with hot water geysers.

One of my disappointments was that the proposal to develop a new department of Emergency Medicine has not been well accepted. I will pursue this matter again during my next trip to Visakhapatnam in October. Of course, my term would have expired by then and I will act within the scope of the continuing mission of AMCANA.

Another area of concern involves neurosurgery. Those of you who attended the TANA meeting in Detroit would recall a Dr Jogi Pattisapu, pediatric neurosurgeon from Orlando and the spouse an alumnus who announced a very large gift. He purchased some neuro- surgical equipment in consultation with head of neurosurgery. To his great disappointment, this equipment has still not been commissioned!. I will now attempt to use the offices of CV Rao to move this forward.

There is currently a lot of excitement about an AMCOSA proposal to develop an indoor sports stadium. There is also an unfortunate development of increased instances of assaults against physicians and hospitals when families feel that they were misinformed or lied to. I have read of several such incidents as I regularly scan the newspapers. In addition, there are several instances of organ theft!! The practices around the issue of informed consent and patient rights are primitive. There is very little formal instruction in the area of death and bereavement and probably poor modeling by the teaching staff. Does AMCANA want to help build a sports stadium or help develop a Bio-Ethics/patient rights initiative?

I am also hoping for a large attendance at the AMC general body meeting during the TANA meeting in Washington DC (http://71.18.190.102/2007tana/Alumni.asp). I take this opportunity to recognize the continuing efforts of Dr PedaVeerraju and Dr MuraliKrishna of AMC Gastroenterology Department. Very little of what Sriram Sonty or I have accomplished could have been achieved without these two super alumni. Dr
PedaVeerraju has agreed to come to the TANA meeting and give an update.
I close this update by appealing to all of you to donate vigorously as we could be at the beginning of substantial stage of renewal and rebuilding in AMC/KGH. All contribution are tax deductible as we are now a full IRS exempt corporation.
    Sincerely,

    Ramamohana Rao Kairam

P.S. After 25 years in the same house in Pelham Manor NY, Indira and I moved to a new house.
